Maracanã has already been the setting for the most important classics in Brazilian football and has hosted historic moments in international football.
Monumental events, such as King Pelé's 1,000th goal, in 1969, also took place on the lawns of the temple of Brazilian football.
Inaugurated on June 16, 1950, it has already hosted games from that year's World Cup and some matches from the 2014 World Cup. It also hosted games from the 2013 Confederations Cup, opening and closing ceremonies of the 2007 Pan American Games and the Olympics in 2016. In addition to sports competitions, Maracanã has hosted important events, such as concerts by Madonna, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Tina Turner, Foo Fighters and Coldplay, as well as outdoor masses of the then Pope John Paul II, in 1980 and 1997.
The stadium underwent a major renovation and had its total capacity extended to 78,838 fans. Maracanã was modernized and today meets international safety, logistics and sustainability requirements. New bars and snack bars provide more comfort for the public, which also has retractable chairs divided by color and produced with certified materials, such as PET bottles. Divided into five levels and into north, south, east and west sectors, Maracanã bets on divisions to facilitate access and location for fans.
