Meningitis Panorama in 10 years

Resumo

Introduction:
Meningitis consists of an inflammation of the meninges, which are the lining and protective layers of the human brain. This condition can cause sudden high fever, severe headache, emesis and stiffness in the back of the neck. This disease can be caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi. Currently, it is possible to be immunized against it. In Brazil, meningitis is a notifiable disease, which allows the accompaniment of this pathology over the years and how it affects the country's population.

Objective:
The project aims to analyze the situation regarding deaths related to meningitis in the last 10 years, by observing aspects such as possibility of avoiding death and utilizing, for this analysis, the TABNET tabulator, responsible for generating information vinculated to SUS.

Methods:
This is an ecological time series study, which used the Health Information System database (TABNET), made available by the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS). In the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS), information about meningitis was collected. Were considered the variables “year of the first symptom”, deaths and evolution. The period of time ranges from January/2012 to January/2022 and the data were divided by brazilian region, state and city. All the information was transferred for the software “Microsoft Excel” to be quantitatively analyzed. This work used secondary data of public domain, therefore dispensing ethical appreciation.

Results:
Between the years 2010 and 2022, there were 196741 confirmed and reported cases of meningitis in Brazil, with an emphasis on the southeast region, with 106063 of those. There have been fluctuations in the regional curves, reaching a peak of 21807 cases in 2012. Since then, the curve has declined (R^2=0,71). Considering only complete years, 2021 had the lowest number of confirmed and reported cases, which was 6223. As for the Federative Units, from 2010 to 2022, São Paulo was the state that had the highest number of confirmed and reported cases of meningitis, totaling 79747, representing 40,53% of the total in Brazil in the same period.

Conclusion:
This study provides data that reveal the decline in confirmed and reported cases of meningitis in Brazil. The highest percentage in the analyzed period was in the Southeast region (53.91%), mainly in São Paulo (40.53%). Future information must be gathered and analyzed to accompany the development of this scenario.
