Simulation training helps in learning the new Brazilian brain death protocol?

Resumo

Background: In 2017, the Federal Medical Council released the new Brain Death (BD) protocol with many modifications compared to the last one. According to the protocol, the training course should be theoretical-practical, however the resolution hasn’t detailed how was this practical activities. Simulation-based teaching has been increased use in medical education and could be part of practical program.
Objectives: to verify if the BD simulation training during the medical course modifies the learning about the new BD protocol.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional analytical study, performed at the University of Fortaleza, Brazil, from March to December of 2018. Forty-five, fourth-year medical students composed the sample. The students were divided into three groups, Group A – students who participated in theoretical class and simulated station; Group B – students who participated only in theoretical class. Group C – students who did not engaged in any activity.
Results: Group A has scored a mean of 8.13 ± 1.01, group B has scored 6.49 ± 1.52, and group C has scored 5.54 ± 1.83 (p = 0.000). A significant difference between the groups in the prerequisite (p=0.004) and the clinical examination step (p=0.003) was found, with the biggest mistakes in Groups B and C.
Conclusion: the BD simulated stations developed contributed significantly to the learning of the new Brazilian BD protocol, for the fourth-year medical students.
