EVALUATION OF CHILD DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN WITH MICROCEPHALY BY CONGENITAL ZIKA VIRUS SYNDROME

Resumo

Introduction: Microcephaly is a congenital malformation in which there is inadequate brain development. Its causes are multiple, among them: the exposure of the mother to the Zika virus during pregnancy. Children may have severe neurological impairment with the presence of brain abnormalities evidenced by intracranial calcifications related to cell death, ocular abnormalities, particularly microphthalmia, sleep disturbances, excessive irritability to touch, and epilepsy. In view of the important neuro-repercussions, children need to be monitored and evaluated regarding their development. Objective: To evaluate the child development of children with congenital microcephaly caused by the Zika virus. Method: A cross-sectional observational study was carried out, assessing child development using the Ages & Stages Questionnaires 3rd Edition (ASQ3 - BR) instrument. This study was approved by the ethics committee of the Federal University of Paraíba (CAAE: 42852621.0.0000.5188) and conducted according to the criteria of Resolution No. 466/2012 of the National Health Council. Nineteen children of both sexes were included in the study. Results: No child scored higher or close to the ASQ3 cut-off score. An important part of the sample showed severe impairment in all domains evaluated, scoring zero in the following skills: communication (84.16%), broad motor (73.64%), fine motor (89.42%), problem solving (84 .16%) and personal skills. and social (84.16%). Conclusion: The results of this study can provide evidence that alerts about the importance of continuous monitoring of these children by a multidisciplinary team, creating therapeutic proposals that stimulate the patient's development, reducing damage and promoting quality of life.
