“FORMANDO SINAPSES”: INSTAGRAM AS A TOOL FOR TEACHING NEUROSCIENCE, AN EXPERIENCE REPORT

Resumo

Introduction: Digital technologies have been consolidating themselves as important educational forms in the teaching and learning process. Among these technologies, social networks have become important tools for the dissemination of educational content and for the democratization of knowledge, with Instagram being one of the main platforms used for this. Thus, it is important to explore this social media as a potential neuroscience teaching network. Objective: To report the use of Instagram as a tool for teaching neurosciences. Method: This is an experience report on the actions carried out by medical students in the university extension project "Formando Sinapses", from February 2022 to June 2022. 8 educational publications were carried out in the thematic axes: “Neuroinformação” (posts containing information about important matters for Neurology), “Neuroartes” (posts relating artistic expressions to Neurology), “Dicionário de Neuro” (explanatory post on neurological terms), “Neuroimagem” (explanatory post on neuroradiology signs) and “Tópicos em Neurologia” (explanatory video on essential topics in Neurology). The publications were aimed at the public with the aim of disseminating information on neurosciences. The posts were made using PowerPoint and Photopea and the videos were made using the cell phone camera. All publications were posted on the Instagram profile @neuruece and the feedbacks were accounted and analyzed for using a spreadsheet created in Excel. Results: The 8 posts published had the following distribution: 4 “Neuroinformação”, 1 “Neuroartes”, 1 “Dicionário de Neuro”, 1 “Neuroimagem” and 1 “Tópicos em Neurologia”. The analysis by Excel accounted for an average of 76 likes, 366 shares and 374 views on the video. In total, 3471 accounts from different cities were reached (Fortaleza (CE), São Paulo (SP), Sobral (CE), Caucaia (CE) and Maracanaú (CE)); 1018 visits to the @neuruece profile and 47 new followers were gained, currently totaling 2562 followers. Conclusion: University extensions projects may contribute to production and dissemination of scientific knowledge to society. The use of Instagram as an educational platform made it possible for more people to be reached with the knowledge disseminated. We believe that the project “Formando Sinapses” significantly increase the diffusion of neuroscience knowledge to our students.
