Post-stroke cognitive assessment in patients from a specialized outpatient clinic

Resumo

Introduction. The occurrence of cognitive impairment after stroke is already studied in the literature. 50% of stroke survivors will have some degree of cognitive impairment, of these approximately 66.7% will have mild cognitive impairment (MCC). Some risk factors, such as the NIHSS, are associated with greater impairment. Objective. To assess the prevalence and predictors of cognitive dysfunction in a stroke outpatient clinic in a reference hospital in Salvador – Bahia. Method. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study carried out through data collection via medical records at the stroke outpatient clinic located at the Professor Edgard Santos University Hospital Complex of the Federal University of Bahia - Professor Francisco Magalhães Neto Outpatient Clinic, of patients treated during the period of January 2021 to October 2021. Among the variables analyzed are: Presence of systemic arterial hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus, acute coronary disease, current smoking, type of stroke if ischemic or hemorrhagic, use of antihypertensive drugs and which class, Pre-stroke rankin, NIHSS Stroke Scale, Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD) and Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores and results of complementary exams which can be cranial tomography or cranial resonance through which the location of the stroke will be identified.Result. There was a 71.4% prevalence of post-stroke cognitive impairment and the most important predictor was low education and prior cognition. Conclusion. There is a high prevalence of post-stroke cognitive impairment. Thus, it is important to act on early diagnosis and rehabilitation.
