Evaluation of adherence to treatment of patients with epilepsy
Resumo
Introduction: Epileptic seizure is characterized by the transient occurrence of signs and/or symptoms about the excessive and synchronous neuronal activity in the brain. The factors that affect the quality of life of chronic disease patients is medication. Drugs will only be effective if taken regularly.
Objectives: Compare adherence to treatment of patients with epilepsy and patients with other chronic diseases.
Methods: Cross‐sectional observational controlled study, with application of a questionnaire to a group of 100 patients diagnosed with epilepsy and 50 controls, who were patients with chronic diseases use medication.
Results: By the controlled partial correlation, there was a positive and strong correlation between the scores of the Morisky tests and the scores of the BMQ Regimen and BMQ Memories test regarding age, disease duration and scholarity in years. Morislky's test and BMQ Regimen score (r = 0.317; p < 0.05) and BMQ Recall score (r = 0.383; p < 0.05) correlated strongly and positively when controlling for the number of focal and bilateral seizures. The effect about having or not having epilepsy using the Mann-Whitney test shows that the diagnosis interferes with the Morisky test score (U = 1,917.00; p < 0.05) and on the BMQ – Regimen score (U = 1,959 .00; p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Patients with epilepsy demonstrated greater adherence to treatment the oldest, disease duration, education level and better control of symptoms.
