ELECTROMYOGRAPHIC PROFILE OF THE OROPHARYNGEAL SWALLOWING DYNAMICS IN INDIVIDUALS WITH PARKINSON’S DISEASE

Resumo

Objective: to determine whether the electromyographic profile of the suprahyoid muscle group and of the masseter muscles are modified according to the oropharyngeal swallowing dynamics in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods: 30 subjects were assessed using videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) and surface electromyogram (EMG) of the masseter and suprahyoid muscle groups during the swallowing of different food consistencies, and volumes. Results: Subjects of both sexes, older than 50 years, presented a decrease in the electric potential (EP) of the evaluated muscles in all impaired biomechanics of the oral and pharyngeal stages, except for the laryngeal penetration, where the EP was increased during the ingestion of the liquid sample. Muscle EP was reduced more frequently during the ingestion of semi-liquid and thickened liquid. There was a strong positive correlation, statistically significant, between the duration of contraction of the evaluated muscles and the duration of the oral transit time; moderate positive correlation, statistically significant, between the duration of contraction of the suprahyoid muscle group and the pharyngeal transit time; weak positive correlation with no statistical significance between the duration of contraction of the muscle pairs evaluated and the duration of the pharyngeal stage. Conclusion: the EP of the masseter and suprahyoid muscle groups are modified according to the presence of oral stage and pharyngeal stage swallowing disorders of certain consistencies and volumes, in patients with PD. Furthermore, oral transit times, duration of the pharyngeal stage, and pharyngeal transition were correlated with the contraction duration of the masseter muscles and suprahyoid muscle group.
