Título

IMPORTANCE OF NURSING MONITORING RELATED TO ONCOLOGICAL PATIENT CARE DURING THE PANDEMIC

Introdução

The pandemic brought new challenges to the health sectors, where nurses became the main elements. This role is due to the courageous, effective and uninterrupted performance of the team, not only in direct care but also in monitoring these patients.

The oncology sector has a telephone monitoring center, led by nurses.

Faced with the unexpected start of the pandemic, we are faced with a new scenario: Monitor, guide and especially prevent the spread of cancer patients who are part of the risk group.

Objetivo

To monitor patients undergoing treatment during the pandemic, managing and managing and mitigating the clinical impacts and their side effects.

Método

The initial strategy was to focus on not interrupting the treatment of cancer patients.

Resultado

The oncology program is represented by approximately 3,000 active patients. Before the pandemic, between the months of January and February 2020, around 8,000 calls (made and received) were counted. Our goal was to directly reach all cancer patients active in the program and especially patients undergoing chemotherapy. Thus, we intensified calls between the months of March and April, accounting for around 11,000 calls. . From the telephone contact made by the nursing staff, in order to sensitize patients, we prevented about 50% of patients from attending the clinic, in order to ensure that they would not face crowding and expose themselves to the imminent risk of contagion. In 2020, we had 17 patients infected with Covid-19 at the beginning of the pandemic until December, which represents 0.5% of our active population and in 2021, we counted 20 infected between June and August, which corresponds to 0.58% of the population. Our results demonstrate the importance of constant and effective monitoring of cancer patients, especially in the face of a pandemic, where we had a low rate of infectivity in patients undergoing treatment.

Conclusão

The vertical model of the health care provider supports greater control and quality of care for cancer patients. In this process, the support of the multidisciplinary team is of great importance, which actively participates in the entire process, acting effectively and focusing on patient safety in the face of the pandemic scenario. The success with the telephone monitoring and care program for our cancer patients highlights the unfavorable outcomes that were avoided, providing better quality of life for the patient.
