EVALUATION OF THE COMPLETENESS OF THE EPIDEMIOLOGICAL VARIABLES OF THE HOSPITAL-BASED REGISTERS IN THE STATE OF ESPIRITO SANTO

Introdução

Introduction: Hospital-Based Registries (HBR) is an important tool for planning cancer prevention and control actions. In addition, it serves as an information base for clinical and epidemiological research on the care provided to patients, through the evaluation of the results of therapeutic protocols and analysis of patient survival. Although the HBR in the state of Espírito Santo (ES) was implemented in 2000, there is still no assessment of the completeness of its epidemiological variables, especially in the most recent period between 2010 and 2017, highlighting the relevance of this study.

Objetivo

Objective: To evaluate the completeness and the trend of completeness of data from the HBR in the state of Espírito Santo between 2010 and 2017.

Método

Methods: An observational retrospective study, part of a larger ecological time-series study and spatial analyses was carries out. Secondary data from the state of ES, collected between the months of September and November 2020 at the State Health Department of Espírito Santo were used. To obtain cancer data, data from the HBR in that state were used. The tumor form from the Integrating System of the HHRs presents sociodemographic variables as well as clinical variables. As a reference for completeness analysis, we adopted the following classification: excellent (< 5%), good (5 to 10%), regular (10 to 20%), poor (20 to 50%) and very poor (≥ 50%) , considering the percentage of missing data. Statistical analyzes were performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS®) version 20.0.

Resultado

Results: During the study period (2010-2017), total completeness of data was observed for the variables of gender, date of first visit to the hospital and histological type of the primary tumor, that is, not having missing data. The variables age, origin, date of first diagnosis of the tumor, previous diagnosis and treatment, location of the primary tumor, first treatment received at the hospital, date of death of the patient and probable location of the primary tumor were classified as excellent completeness (1%), throughout the period studied.

Conclusão

Conclusion: Demographic, social and clinical variables of cancer patients had excellent completeness in the HBR of the ES. Indeed, these variables are of great importance for public health surveillance since such information provides us with subsidies to learn about the health-disease process.
