Título

CANCER PATIENTS IN COPING WITH COVID - 19

Introdução

Introduction:
The emergence of the pandemic caused by COVID-19, brought numerous uncertainties and generated several challenging repercussions for the control of the disease and prevention of increased mortality and complications, especially in the most vulnerable population.
Cancer patients in turn belong to the risk group due to immunosuppression condition related to treatments or by the disease itself increasing the risk of infection by COVID-19, with possible worse clinical outcomes and higher mortality outcome.

Objetivo

To highlight the importance of modifying actions in assistance to ensure the safety of cancer patients under treatment.

Método

Literature review in the Lilacs and Pubmed databases, without temporal delimitation, with the DeCS/MeSH descriptors: "COVID 19", "oncology" and "nurse care". As inclusion criteria, articles published in full in Portuguese, English or Spanish were selected, with no exclusion criteria.

Resultado

There is no evidence to support the need for change or suspension of oncology treatment, as well as bone marrow transplantation, since these measures affect the response to treatment, increasing the chance of progression or refractoriness of the underlying disease.
Changes in oncology treatment should be evaluated individually by the oncologist in charge for patient safety. To support institutions and professionals who treat oncology patients, there are some recommendations by national and international associations aiming to provide the maintenance of treatment whenever necessary and patient safety in the hospital/outpatient setting.

Conclusão

Considering the assistance to oncology patients in coping with COVID-19, it is essential that specific precautions be taken to avoid infection with the virus. Cancer patients infected with COVID-19 will need immediate and close follow-up by the multiprofessional team. Healthcare professionals and hospital managers have been working unstintingly to try to minimize the effects of treatment interruption and patient illness.
