Título

STRATEGY TO IMPROVE CANCER PATIENT CARE USING LEAN SIX SIGMA METHODOLOGY.

Apresentação do caso

The care service for patients with cancer must develop actions for continuous improvement managed in terms of safe, safe, humanized and quality care, mapping inmates that can impact patient care. We carried out a survey of all the factors that delayed the start of treatment in the Infused Sector, which, in addition to increasing the length of stay of the patient, increased their dissatisfaction. The objective of the study was to reduce by 30% the waiting time of patients to occupy chemotherapy seats, making use of the process improvement philosophy: Lean Six Sigma methodology. The waiting time of 150 assistances in January 2019 was followed. The problem was addressed using the DMAIC cycle together with Lean principles and Lean Six Sigma technical tools (RR short method, FEPSC diagram, chi square test, diagram Pareto diagram, cause and effect diagram) to find possible causes of process variation.

Discussão

Results: Initially, the waiting time for patients to occupy chemotherapy seats was 29 minutes (sigma capacity 1.08). Four potential causes of process variation were found: a) Difficulty in punching - action: creation of packages, which aim to train nurses in all procedures involving infection prevention and patient safety; b) Hyperglycemia - action: The Scientific Board defined that: 1) Patients with blood glucose values up to 300mg / dl, must start chemotherapy. However, the physician must be necessary and define a procedure within 30 minutes of the identification of hyperglycemia.2) A patient with blood glucose greater than 300mg / dl can only start chemotherapy with permission from the doctor on duty; c) Pending contact - action: educational campaign to minimize difficult-to-contact patients; d) Outdated pharmaceutical intervention – action: intervention signaling all the history of nonconformities carried out previously. After the implemented improvement actions, the waiting time for occupancy dropped by 34% (sigma capacity 1.45), reaching approximately 19 minutes.

Comentários finais

Conclusion: in view of the above, we prove the benefits of the Lean Six Sigma Methodology, which are associated with increased productivity, cost reduction, improved company results, improved analytical capacity and decision-making and customer satisfaction.
