TRENDS IN BREAST CANCER INCIDENCE IN THE STATE OF ESPIRITO SANTO: PRELIMINARY FINDINGS

Introdução

Introduction: Worldwide, cancer has a high psychosocial and economic burden for individuals, families and health systems. In women, excluding non-melanoma skin tumors, female breast cancer ranks first in all Brazilian regions, with an estimated risk of 81.06/100 thousand in the Southeast region for each year of the 2020 triennium -2022. In the state of Espírito Santo, which has Hospital-Based Registries (HBR) implemented since 1998, these data have not been extensively explored yet.

Objetivo

Objective: To assess trends in breast cancer incidence in the state of Espírito Santo and identify associated factors.

Método

Methodology: An ecological and retrospective design study of time series was undertaken. Secondary data were collected from the state of Espírito Santo, through the Population-Based Cancer Registry (PBCR) and RHC from the only High Complexity Oncology Care Center-HCOCC and from the seven High Complexity Oncology Care Units-HCOCU of the state. All occurrences of breast cancer in women in Espírito Santo, according to age group, were included and analyzed. For data analysis, the analysis of temporal trends (incidence) for breast cancer in the state was used, defining the time interval from 2000 to 2016, to better understand the outcome in this time series.

Resultado

Results: A total of 88,386 cases of all types of cancer in the state of Espírito Santo, from 2000 to 2016, in the RHC implemented in the state's Oncology Care Network. For breast cancer classified ICD-50 in the ICD-O (International Classification of Diseases for Oncology) in the variable primary location of the tumor, 12,012 cases were found in the same period of time. There was an exponential growth of cases between the years 2000 and 2016, with 345 cases of breast cancer as the primary location in 2000 and jumping to 1,179 cases in 2016.

Conclusão

Conclusion: Data from the HBC of Espírito Santo between 2000 and 2016 will enable robust results in the representation of trends in measures of impact of the disease in the female population with malignant breast cancer in the state. Such preliminary data will contribute to Cancer Health Surveillance, enabling the design of strategies and interventions for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the affected population.
