Título

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE OF MALIGNANT NEOPLASMS OF THE LIVER AND INTRAHEPATIC BILIARY WAYS IN BAHIA BETWEEN 2011 AND 2020

Introdução

Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) constitutes 90% of cases of primary liver neoplasms, being the fifth most common neoplasm in the world and the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Symptoms of HCC are nonspecific and are mostly related to impaired liver function. Its development is mainly due to chronic liver diseases, often in a stage of cirrhosis, chronic alcohol intake is one of the main etiological factors, second only to chronic hepatitis B and C infections.

Objetivo

Describe hospital admissions for malignant neoplasms of the liver and intrahepatic biliary tract in Bahia, using the ICD-10 morbidity list (C-22), in the period from 2011 to 2020.

Método

This is an epidemiological, descriptive and retrospective study of quantitative analysis, whose data source was the Hospital Morbidity System (SIH-SUS) of the Ministry of Health.

Resultado

A total of 4,235 hospitalizations for malignant neoplasms of the liver and intrahepatic biliary tract were registered in the state of Bahia, with an increase of 110% between the years 2011 and 2020. Hospitalizations occurred predominantly in males (55.3%) and in the age group of 60-69 years (28%). The mortality rate was 28.24, with a decrease of 32% in the period evaluated, with a predominance of males and those aged 80 years or more. The average value per hospitalization was R$ 2,060.82 and the average length of stay was 6.1 days, with a decrease of 46% in the period evaluated.

Conclusão

It is possible to infer that there was an increase in hospitalizations for malignant neoplasms of the liver and intrahepatic biliary tract in the state of Bahia, in the period evaluated, following a national trend. The predominance of hospitalizations and mortality in males is in line with the literature and is related to factors such as higher alcohol intake and exposure to certain agents. The greater number of hospitalizations in older individuals is related to factors such as a greater number of comorbidities.
