IMPACT OF THE PANDEMIC CAUSED BY COVID-19 ON THE PROFILE OF CANCER PATIENTS TREATED IN THE SUS BRAZIL: A TEMPORAL ANALYSIS

Introdução

With the emergence of COVID-19, health centers needed to redistribute their patients, focusing on diagnosis, emergencies and treatment of the new virus. The clinical services of cancer screening and diagnosis were suspended causing a delay in early detection and follow-up of these cancer patients, consequently, they may have an immeasurable impact on Brazilian public health.

Objetivo

Analysis of hospitalization and lethality due to neoplastic diseases in the year preceding the COVID-19 pandemic and during the first year of infection in Brazil.

Método

Cross-sectional, descriptive study, performed using secondary data available at SIH-SUS / DATASUS. We considered all pre-period pandemic cases, registered from March 2019 to March 2020. And in the first year of infection by COVID-19, the cases recorded from March 2020 to March 2021, according to the ordinance of the Ministry of Health. The variables studied were: number of deaths, hospitalization and lethality due to neoplasia in the national territory.

Resultado

During the period before to the COVID-19 pandemic, 59,135 cases of patients with neoplastic diseases were reported in the country. Regarding malignant neoplasms, with the exception of non-melanoma skin cancer, there are 4,158 cases of breast cancer, 3,167 of prostate cancer and 2,350 of leukemia. The lethality in this period was 6.6%. On the other hand, compared to the period of the pandemic was in effect, it can be seen that the number of hospitalizations has drastically reduced, dropping by almost 25% (44,403) compared to the previous year. The most frequent types of neoplasms do not have changes. The number of deaths had a total of 3,841, a lower number than in the previous period, but the lethality was 8.6%, representing an increase of 1% compared to previous periods.

Conclusão

It is noted that the number of hospitalizations decreased and consequently an increase in lethality. It was found that fewer diagnoses were made by receiving the population in sight to medical centers and a reduction in auxiliary exams for early diagnosis. This, it is believed that the mortality from cancer should continue to increase when compared to previous years, since many people ended up not receiving an early diagnosis, reducing their chance of survival. Therefore, more studies are needed on the change in the epidemiological profile of patients affected by this pathology.
