161 / 5000 RESULTADOS DE TRADUÇAO IMPACT OF COVID 19 INFECTION ON ONCOLOGICAL PATIENTS FOLLOWED AT A MULTIDISCIPLINARY ONCOLOGY TREATMENT CENTER IN PERNAMBUCO: A SERIES OF CASES

Introdução

The pandemic affected the health system around the world, with the interruption of care for several cancer patients. The real consequences that Covid 19 will bring to cancer patients are not yet known, but it is known that they are at greater risk of developing more severe cases of this disease, whether due to the immunosuppression of the neoplasm or as a result of the treatments used. Most evidence suggests a low incidence of covid 19 among those who are on active cancer treatment (1-4%). Mortality in this population is highly variable, with studies ranging from 5.6% to 37.7%.

Objetivo

Evaluate the impact caused by Covid-19 infection in the treatment of cancer patients followed up at a reference oncology service

Método

This is a cross-sectional and retrospective analytical study. Student's t-test was used to compare age with segment delay and death. The assumed significance level was 5%. Adult patients (> 18 years) were selected for follow-up at an Oncology service in Recife-PE with a diagnosis of any neoplasm under active treatment or under clinical follow-up and with a diagnosis of Covid-19 infection through RT-PCR (swab nasal) or serology showing previous exposure. The variables analyzed were: age, gender, ethnicity, performance-status scale, other comorbidities, need for admission by Covid 19 , need for admission to the ICU, need for mechanical ventilation and/or vasoactive drugs, neoplastic disease status (under treatment or no), treatment used, staging. The outcomes analyzed were: delay in treatment and/or follow-up and death.

Resultado

Among the patients admitted, 4 (25%) had hematologic malignancy and 4 (25%) had neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract. Among those who died, four (40%) had a diagnosis of gastrointestinal tract cancer. Regarding those patients who delayed follow-up or cancer treatment, six (60%) had advanced stage disease (III or IV), with p =0.028. The mortality rate was 20.8% and 80% of patients who died from complications of Covid 19 had advanced disease, with p = 0.765).

Conclusão

Despite the small and heterogeneous sample, this study is important to outline the profile of these patients to optimize their management in the Oncology service and to know over time the possible repercussions that infection by COVID 19 can cause, modifying future outcomes.
