PALLIATIVE CARE IN NA ONCOLOGIC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

Introdução

Palliative care (PC) is an essential component of health care and is still unknown or nonexistent in most hospital areas, intensive care unit being one of those. The Lancet Commission estimated that annually, more than 61 million people experience health conditions associated with suffering that could be significantly ameliorated through palliative care. Since the beginning palliative care was focused on alleviating the relief of suffering at the end of life. Because now is considered a best practice and is increasingly implemented earlier in the trajectory of life-threatening health conditions, it is importante to know how the multiprofissional team understands this quality of care since they are responsible for its implementation

Objetivo

understand the multiprofissional team perception about palliative care and its perspectives, personal meanings and barriers

Método

observational, transversal study performed in na oncologic intensive care unit using a semi-structured interview with five questions apllied to all heatlh care team; the answers were classified by similarity

Resultado

twenty-four professionals among all categories were interviewed. The majoriy expressed an understand of care and comfort to patients without a curative perspective. Sadness and impotence were common feelings among the team but they all recognize their indispensable place as a team member. Talking about barriers two were the most cited: the family refusal to accept the palliation and the team curative thoughts. Just one professional had studied about palliative care in the graduation course

Conclusão

there is a need to prepare the multiprofissional team and increase knowledge in order to break barriers and delivery a better care to the patients in the end of life.
