Título

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE OF NON-HODGKIN LYMPHOMA IN THE STATE OF BAHIA FROM 2011 TO 2020

Introdução

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is a type of cancer that arises in the cells of the lymphatic system and spreads in a disorderly manner. More than twenty different types of lymphomas fall into this category. The impairment of the immune system, resulting from genetic diseases, exposure to mutagenic agents or infections by certain pathogens - especially certain viruses - can provide an increased risk for the development of this lymphoma.

Objetivo

Describe the number of hospital admissions for non-Hodgkin's lymphomas in Bahia, using the ICD-10 morbidity list (C83), in the period from 2011 to 2020, regarding hospitalization costs, sociodemographic characteristics and mortality.

Método

This is an epidemiological, descriptive and retrospective study of quantitative analysis, whose data source was the Hospital Morbidity System (SIH-SUS) of the Ministry of Health, tabulated in graphics and tables in the Microsoft Excel 2016 program.

Resultado

There were 5,721 hospitalizations for non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in the state of Bahia, with an increase of 25% from 2011 to 2020 and the average value per hospitalization of R$1,651.32. The average length of stay of hospitalizations was 9 days, while the mortality rate was 12.22 deaths/100 admissions, with an increase of 33.7% and predominantly in males (61.51%), as well as in individuals over 50 years (62.37%). 58.31% of admissions occurred in males and 51.37% occurred in mixed race. The predominant age group in hospitalizations was from 50 to 59 years (15.13%), followed by 60 to 69 years (14.3%).

Conclusão

There is a considerable increase in the number of hospitalizations, as well as deaths due to NHL since 2011, following national and regional trends. The highest number of hospitalizations in males and in the age group after 50 years is in agreement with the literature. Increased mortality in older individuals is related to risk factors such as accumulation of mutations, exposure to agents, dysregulation of the immune system and others.
