Título

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE OF HEAD AND NECK CANCER PATIENTS TREATED AT THE SUS CLINICAL ONCOLOGY SERVICES BRASILIA – DF.

Introdução

Head and neck cancer affects more than 1.5 million people a year worldwide. It is responsible for about 10,000 deaths each year in Brazil, with oral cavity cancer being the fifth most common among men.

Objetivo

To determine the epidemiological profile of patients with head and neck cancer treated at the oncology services of the SUS in Brasília – DF from January 2015 to December 2020.

Método

Descriptive and retrospective study carried out at the Clinical Oncology Center Hospital Regional de Taguatinga and IHBASE. This work was approved by the Ethics and Research Committee of the Health Sciences Education and Research Foundation (FEPECS), opinion number 3,805,282.

Resultado

Preliminary data from 230 patients were obtained. The male gender was the most prevalent (83%). The average age was 59 years, with the vast majority being smokers (85%) and drinkers (67%), only 11.7% denied smoking and alcohol consumption. Oral cavity cancer (32.59%) was the most prevalent site, followed by squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the larynx (27.68%) and oropharynx (16.52%), 22.38% of patients underwent surgery and the most observed staging was T4 (51.32%) N2 (32.28%) and 7.11% already had metastatic disease at diagnosis. 22.86% of patients underwent induction chemotherapy, 73.81% of patients underwent combined treatment with radiotherapy and chemotherapy, 18.10% underwent palliative chemotherapy. The overall survival for patients with SCC of the oral cavity was 1.54 years; oropharyngeal SCC 1.93 years; Nasopharynx SCC 1.81 and laryngeal SCC 1.99. The mean time from diagnosis to initiation of treatment was 3 months and 11 days.

Conclusão

The clinical and epidemiological profile of patients with head and neck cancer is in accordance with the data described in the literature, being a disease predominantly composed of male patients, from the fifth decade of life, being mostly smokers and alcoholics with more than 30 years of exposure and having as primary location of the most prevalent tumor the region of the oral cavity. Characterizing the epidemiological profile of patients with head and neck cancer in the Federal District is essential to help plan prevention actions and direct actions to deal with the disease and organize public health policies.
