INDIRECT ECONOMIC COSTS ANALYSIS OF CERVICAL CANCER PATIENTS

Introdução

Cervical cancer is the third cancer for incidence and the fourth for mortality in women in Brazil. The financial costs of this cancer are high for both the patient and the society as a whole. However, cervical cancer is a potentially preventable and curable neoplasm if diagnosed and treated early.

Objetivo

To evaluate cervical cancer patients diagnosed and treated at an oncology reference institution and analyze indirect economic costs of these patients considering the loss of productivity, potential years of lost life and loss of income due to death.

Método

A retrospective cohort of cervical cancer patients diagnosed and treated at an oncology reference institution from January 2012 to December 2016 was identified by the CID C53.9. Clinical characteristics of the patients were evaluated and indirect costs studied were loss of productivity, potential years of lost life and loss of income due to death.

Resultado

129 cervical cancer patients treated at the institution during the referred period were evaluated. The sample had a median age of 45.5 years at diagnosis and the housewife profession was the most common (33.3%). The epidermoid histological subtype was the most prevalent (87.5%) and the clinical stages most frequent were IIB (32.55%) and IIIB (26.35%), respectively. Overall, the cohort obtained an average of 31.4 years of potential years of lost life for each patient leading to a total estimated lost income of R$ 5,555,327.51.

Conclusão

This study provides relevant data about indirect economic costs of cervical cancer patients treated at an oncology reference institution and suggests elements about the magnitude of this problem in the context of public health, where we must prioritize the primary and secondary prevention of this neoplasm.
