Título

ASSESMENT OF SKIN CANCER INCIDENCE IN SCREENING PROGRAM IN ESPIRITO SANTO (BRAZIL)

Introdução

Skin cancer is the most common malignant neoplasm in the Brazilian population, representing 30% of these diagnoses. It can be classified as non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) and melanoma skin cancer (MSK). Concerning to NMSC, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the most common one and with the best prognosis, and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) stands out. MSK is less frequent and more severe, due to the possibility of metastasis, which is related to high mortality.

Objetivo

Describe skin cancer diagnoses incidence in a screening program in Espírito Santo (Brazil) and its distribution by gender and photoprotection.

Método

Descriptive study of data obtained from a skin cancer screening program between march to december of 2019 and march of 2020, analyzed by frequencies.

Resultado

A total of 1360 patients are included in the present study. It was observed 334 cases suggestive of pre-neoplasms (24.56%) and 396 cases compatible with skin cancer (29.12%), while the other cases were classified as other dermatoses or absence of dermatoses. Among skin neoplasms there were 387 cases of NMSC (97.73%) and 9 of MSK (2.27%). As for the classification of the lesions, there were 323 cases compatible with BCC (81.57%), 41 with SCC (10.35%), 9 with BCC and SCC (2.27%), 14 with other malignant tumors (3.54%) and 9 with MSK (2.27%). Regarding gender, among the diagnoses of NMSC there were 87 men (48.32%) and 200 women (51.68%), while among the cases of MPC 1 man (11.11%) and 8 women were identified (88.89%). Analyzing sun protection use, 292 (75.45%) patients with NMSC, 7 (77.78%) patients with MPC and 266 (79.64%) patients with pre-neoplasm reported not using any means of photoprotection.

Conclusão

Undeniably, skin cancer is a relevant public health concern, therefore, it is essential to develop prevention strategies, such as raising awareness among the population about the need for photoprotection and for the reduction of photoexposure. So, it is important to increase the number of screening programs, facilitate patient access to health facilities, input measures for early diagnosis and seek therapeutic intervention in early stages.
