Título

Analysis of overall survival, epidemiological and clinical profle of patients with advanced malignancy treated at Evangélico Mackenzie University Hospital in Curitiba

Introdução

Cancer confgures as the second leading cause of death. A high number of patients will experience disease progression or cancer diagnosis at an advanced stage, making the palliative care very important at this stage of the disease.

Objetivo

To evaluate the main factors on overall survival for patients with advancer cancer.

Método

Retrospective analysis of 30 patients with advanced malignancy treated between 2009-2014 Epidemiological, clinical and survival data were considered.

Resultados

Patients were predominantly male (60%) with gastrointestinal malignancies (53,3%). The median follow-up was 3.4 months. Pain was the most prevalent symptom in 60% of patients. No patient reported any severe pain. The lower survival rates were observed among patients with head and neck neoplasms.

Conclusão

Early referral to palliative care, as well an adequate knowledge of pain management and putting the multidisciplinary team continuously next to the patient through a multidisciplinary approach, may improve survival and quality of life of patients in the end of life.
