Título

Immunohistochemical analysis of the ki67 expression in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

Introdução

Despite the esophagus cancer configured among the ten most common cancers, the diagnosis are usually late, resulting in very low survival rates.

Objetivo

To evaluate the frequency ofthe main prognostic factors, the impact from the immunoexpression of Ki67 in survival ratesand their association with the clinic and pathologic factors_

Método

Methods: retrospective analysis of 18 cases from esophageal squamous cell carcinoma underwent to surgical treatment of the
primary tumor during the period since 2005 to 2013. We used the median as cut-off in order to consider the immunohistochemical expression of Ki67.

Resultados

Dysphagia was the most frequent symptom, present in 10 patients (55.6%). All the patients underwent mediastinal transhiatal esophagectomy. Regarding overall survival, patients with underexpression of Ki67 had survival rates of 77.2% in two years, while patients with Ki67 overexpression showed rates 33.3% in two years (p = 0.154). There was no statistically significant association betweenthe presence of theimmunohistochemistryoverexpression of Ki67 and the main prognostic factors used in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Conclusão

Most patients were symptomatic and had underexpressed Ki67 at diagnosis, higher survival rates were noticed in patients with Ki67 underexpressed. There was no significant association between Ki67 immunoexpression and the main prognostics factors used for the evaluation of esophageal cancer.
