Título
Music therapy during the radiotherapy treatment session: an experience report
Introdução
During cancer treatment, patients experience psychological and physiological discomfort such as nausea, vomiting, pain, anxiety and fear. To remedy these unpleasant sensations, patients are subjected to pharmacological treatments, which sometimes lead to undesirable side effects. Currently, we know that there are less invasive measures which contribute to the patient's well-being, such as music therapy. Music therapy is an approach used through art to connect the patient, during their treatment, with their healthy self through music. Studies show that the musical intervention used in the treatment of cancer patients helps to reduce anxiety, pain, frequency heart, respiratory and blood pressure. The insertion of music in the hospital context improves the patient's experience regarding their therapy and the service offered by the institution.
Objetivo
To present the implementation of music therapy practice during radiotherapy treatment.
Método
This is a descriptive study of experience report type on the use of music therapy during radiotherapy sessions.
Resultados
With the installation of Linear Accelerators - Truebeams, which has a music input, it was possible to connect electronic devices and thus enable music to be played during the radiotherapy session. The music or playlist played can be chosen by the patient or he/she performed the treatment with the music that was already selected. Patients reported feeling less anxious, calmer and more comfortable when playing music, with the feeling that the treatment was faster.
Conclusão
We observed that musical intervention during radiotherapy treatment is a non-invasive strategy that contributes to the patient's well-being, minimizing their anguish and anxiety, as well as providing a moment of joy, reflection and meeting with themselves during the time which the patients remain alone in the treatment room. Furthermore, music therapy is one of the pillars of Planetree certification, which is part of the Institutional strategy, focusing on patient-centered care.
