IMPLEMENTATION OF A NAVIGATION PROGRAM IN NURSING IN ONCOLOGY SERVICE

Introdução

Patient navigation is characterized by the navigator nurse's monitoring of patients, family members and caregivers, from the discovery of the disease, understanding of the treatment, explanations and handling of adverse reactions, to the elimination of barriers that hinder treatment adherence.

Objetivo

Report the experience of implementing the navigation program for cancer patients.

Método

Qualitative study, of the experience report type, carried out in a private oncology service located in the northwest of the State of Rio Grande do Sul.

Resultado

From September 2020 to March 2021, meetings were held with the management and coordination to discuss and define the implementation of the Oncology Patient Navigation Program, as well as the search for scientific texts, conducting courses and training related to the theme. Afterwards, navigation protocols for patients who undergo infusions in the chemotherapy clinic and those who use oral chemotherapy were elaborated. At the same time, the materials contained in the “Guide for the Development and Implementation of Patient Navigation Programs for High Complexity Oncology Centers in Brazil” were adapted to the reality of the service. In March 2021, patient navigation began after the diagnosis of cancer. We currently navigate 22 patients undergoing injectable chemotherapy and 43 patients undergoing oral chemotherapy. The Navigation is a strategy that has been used by care services in the field of oncology. Many institutions are mainly involving nurses to navigate patients, assess needs and develop an individualized care plan, overcoming barriers that hinder treatment adherence.

Conclusão

The implementation of the Navigation Program is still in the improvement phase, but its implementation will certainly result in an improvement in the quality and safety of the assistance provided at the institution.
