Título

Migraine and Mood regulation: A Summary Review

Introdução

There is a growing body of evidence in research in neurology of the association between migraine and mood dysregulation disorders. The present study focuses on compiling current trends in migraine research assessing common comorbidities and their pathophysiology.

Objetivo

The present study aims to evaluate the previously published literature on migraine and mood regulation disorders, both from the empirical and also basic science background, and their current mode of treatment, in a summary review.

Método

The literature analyzed was retrieved using a set of Mesh terms and Keywords on PubMed data-base to describe Migraine and Psychiatric disorders.

Resultados

Previously, migraine has been associated with a series of neuropsychiatric conditions and symptoms - and migraineurs have been shown to be suffering from such comorbidities in a higher likelihood than the general population - ranging from major depression to bipolar disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder, but also other than issues involving strictly the central nervous system, to the the autonomic as well- namely dysautonomia symptoms.
The overall implication for a patient's health suffering from migraine and mood disorders is still a matter of research. Certain personality traits and dysfunctional affective attachment patterns have also been found to be more closely present in this group, and its cause has been a subject of speculation.
Despite not being widely assessed in the clinical setting, it might be of importance to consider such comorbidities when evaluating migraine patients. The question as to the origins and pathophysiology of migraine gain increasingly more depth of explanation and clarity and is of main importance to the entire population of patients suffering from migraine.

Conclusão

The studies found still show a certain degree of uncertainty regarding the putative factors in migraine responsible for the emotional turmoil seen in patients with this chronic condition. However, empirical correlations showing this association of both mood disorders and insecure attachment patterns in adults, alongwith imaging findings consistent with modifications in the central nervous system, give light in understanding how mood dysregulation can be intensified and even pre-conditioned by this type of chronic pain and help us manage it in the clinical setting.
