Título

Adherence to antiretroviral therapy and its psychosocial cultural crossings: a narrative literature review

Introdução

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a public health problem as it affects a relevant part of the Brazilian population. Adherence to antiretroviral treatment is necessary not only to lower the mortality rate of the carriers but also to reduce the spread of the virus. However, on the other hand, there are psychosocial and cultural aspects that permeate the effectiveness in the treatment of AIDS and other ISTS.

Objetivo

Thus, the present work aims to analyze the psychosocial and cultural aspects that permeate the adherence to HIV treatment and the possible contributions of the health professional in this process, using cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques.

Método

For this study, a narrative literature review on the theme and an experience report with fragments of the treatment process of an adult patient attended at a university hospital in the city of Porto Alegre was used.

Resultados

When it comes to adherence to antiretroviral therapy, psychosocial and cultural aspects that permeate and create a stigma around the disease are challenging obstacles along the way. In the same way, internal and subjective issues appear as major threats to the performance of necessary health behaviors.

Conclusão

The cognitive-behavioral psychologist has an important role in working with the aforementioned demands, making possible cognitive distortions and maladaptive beliefs more flexible, and aiming at facilitating the process of treatment adherence.
