Título
Cognitive and emotional aspects developed by patients with multiple sclerosis during the illness process and hospitalization: contributions of cognitive-behavioral therapy.
Introdução
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease that damages part of the Central Nervous System (CNS) and affects its healthy cells, causing motor and neurological sequelae.
Objetivo
This work aims to understand the psychological and emotional aspects observed in patients diagnosed and admitted in a general hospital.
Método
A narrative literature review was carried out, investigating the main topics related to the theme, illustrated through the case report of three patients treated in brief cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy (CBT) at a tertiary health center in 2021.
Resultados
The literature indicates that, commonly, 30 to 50% of individuals with the disease present significant cognitive impairments, such as dysarthria, executive dysfunction, reduced processing speed, in addition to greater depressive symptoms and dysfunctional beliefs. The most common phenomena in the cases referred to were: maladaptive cognitive distortions, such as catastrophizing, negative filtering, as well as depressed mood and motor fatigue. Considering the common semiology presented by them, and also giving importance to the characteristics of the family, social and environmental context in which they are inserted, it is evident that there is an influence of these factors on their automatic beliefs system and thoughts, originated by the progression of the disease or already predisposed by the context in which they lived.
Conclusão
CBT techniques, such as motivational interviews and psychoeducation, are effective for the treatment of dysfunctional comorbidities associated with the disease.
