Título

Psychological phenomena involved in long-term adult oncology hospital patients

Introdução

A cancer diagnosis is permeated with representations of disease and the threat of death. Even with the constant technological advances in its detection and treatment, this unfavorable organic condition is extremely feared, causing stress (and other psychopathological symptoms) in the patient, family, and friends.

Objetivo

This study aims to analyze the phenomena that may arise during this period of hospitalization, as well as to evaluate psychological techniques that have the potential to assist these healthcare users.

Método

This study consists of a narrative literature review on psychological aspects involved in long-term hospital patients, as well as an experience report of psychological care provided to cancer patients, to illustrate the discussion of comprehensive health care.

Resultados

Thus, it is evident that techniques such as Socratic questioning and diaphragmatic breathing are effective in therapy with cancer patients, as they provide the identification and flexibility of dysfunctional thoughts related to the disease, as shown in the experience of attending this sample.

Conclusão

In addition to providing better coping mechanisms for this disease process, as suggested in the literature, it also promotes the development of personal and internal resources for coping with stressful situations, such as diagnosis and chemotherapy treatment.
